After stormy Saturday, sunny skies expected Sunday

Fast-moving storms whipped through upstate New York on Saturday, bringing down trees and power lines from Warren and Washington counties down to Dutchess and Ulster counties.

A short but heavy rainstorm also made for a muddy Belmont Stakes race at Saratoga Race Course, leaving a rainbow over the starting gate at post

time.

Skies will be partly sunny across the Capital Region with a chance for showers in the afternoon, according to National Weather Service forecasters. The Hudson Valley will be sunny, with clouds rolling in Sunday night.

Severe thunderstorm warning expires

8:23 p.m.: The storm that prompted

the National Weather Service to issue a severe thunderstorm warning for Orange, Putnam, Rockland and Westchester counties has weakened below severe limits and has exited the warned area. The warning will expire at 8:30 p.m., but gusty winds and thunderstorms are still possible Saturday evening.

The severe thunderstorm watch in effect for east central New York will expire at 9 p.m.

8:13 p.m.: A strong thunderstorm is moving over Pine Plains, 12 miles east of Rhinebeck, and moving east at 30 mph.
