Thunderstorm capsizes sailboat, leaves thousands without power

A severe thunderstorm passed through the Mid Hudson Valley on Saturday evening, leaving residents without power, felling trees, downing power lines and overturning a sailboat on the Hudson River.

According to

a Sunday morning release from Central Hudson — the utility covering the middle and upper reaches of the Hudson Valley — crews worked overnight to restore service to more than 11,000 homes and businesses in the valley that were impacted by downed trees and power lines.

By 8 a.m. Sunday, about 4,200 customers were still without power, mostly in Ulster and Orange counties. As of 12:10 p.m., 112 active outages remained impacting 2,601 customers. Central Hudson expects to have most repairs completed by the end of the day.

“Crews made strong progress through the night, but we know there is much more work to be done,” Eric Kiszkiel, Central

Hudson’s senior vice president of engineering & operations, said in the release. “Our team will be out in the field all day Sunday working to make repairs and get the lights back on for our customers… we will not stop until everyone who was impacted by these storms is restored.”

The force of the storm capsized a sailboat near Poughkeepsie’s Walkway Over the Hudson. The city’s fire department posted a video to Facebook

showing responders being pelted by rain as they navigated the river’s rough waters. No injuries were reported.
