Rain returns this weekend, but sun and heat are expected, too

ALBANY — Following a wet and cold Memorial Day weekend and more

rain last weekend, precipitation is expected to return Saturday, according to a meteorologist with the National Weather Service.

The wet weather is predicted to be less of an all-day, steady rain like the region has seen recently, allowing more time for people to spend outside in warmer temperatures.

Frugis said rain could return to the region on Saturday and Sunday, following a fairly dry stretch of weather during the workweek.

“Friday is going to be kind of a sunny and hot day, with highs of around 90. On Saturday, we’re going to have pretty warm temperatures again, probably in the upper 80s, but we will have a chance of showers and thunderstorms on Saturday, mostly in the afternoon and evening hours, so it’ll be kind of scattered — it’s not guaranteed everywhere that we’ll see something,” he said.

“But there will be a bunch of showers and thunderstorms around on Saturday. As we get into Sunday, it’ll be a little cooler. We are looking at a high around 80 on Sunday, and there could still be a few showers, especially early in the day.”

Last year, the region saw some form of rain every weekend for over five months, stretching from the winter months after

Thanksgiving to May. So far, the amount of rain for the Albany area from January to May is a few inches less than at this point in 2025, according to climate data from the National Weather Service. So far this year, 12.24 inches of rain fell during the first five months of the year. During the same period last year, 17.25 inches fell.

The last Saturday and Sunday without rain was May 16-17, and there was no measurable precipitation on the Friday before either, Frugis said. Every weekend since has featured some rain.
